A short note to MadWarrior's Counter Attack
I have read MadWarrior's Counter Attack. Well, the arguement for cooling system is wrong! It is because your refrigerator still generates heat, right? So, why the cooling system for superconductor won't generate heat. Actually, the lower the superconductor system works, the more heat we need to pump into the system to cool it down!

A Counter Attack
First of all, I believe that MS uses optical communication equipment instead of radio equipment. There exists two main benefits. Firstly, optical communication provides wider bandwidth and higher data rate. If we take wars nowadays on Earth as an analogy, high efficiency communication with large signal bandwidth and data rate is essential for counter jamming. Therefore, provided that line of sight communication path is usually available in space, optical communication is a must. Secondly, this type of communication can be highly directional which enhances energy efficiency. Tracking system can be easily built using microwave scanners. Next thing I would like to talk a little bit about is the mechanical system of MS. Though I am not a mechnical engineering specialist, I guess there still exists a possiblity of building robots of size comparable with Gundam. Firstly, advance in robotics and material science are promising in these few years. Besides, software advancement may finally be able to solve control problem. But in control theory and mechanical engineering, robot control is still an active research topic and thus I am not sure how large a robot we can build by now. Furthermore, solid state cooling system is also studying extensively. The physics is too much involved and I also not be able to tell too much. But, for sure, the cooling temperature of this type of cooling system can easily achieve down to 85Kelvin. This temperature may already be able to run high temperature superconductor made computer systems. During these few years, advancement in micromachining is huge. I heard some students studying in Caltech (The school that I am now studying) is going to build microbat for military applications. This implies the size of many important features such as computers, communication equipment and sensoring equipment can be made very small without sacrificying their performance. This reduces the mechnical support required for MS. The only thing that I worry about was armor of MS. It is not possible to hook up armor pieces of M-1 (US main battle tank) onto Gundam. It's simply too heavy! But if we thought it twice, we would understand that war in space didn't need heavy armor. It was because laser or plasma weapons were too powerfull that armor was useless. Certainly, there exists a lot of things that was not solved. Besides, I still doubt the necessity of using MS even though I believe we will eventually be able to build it. One last note about space battle ships. Note that in space, war is going to be in 3-D. I don't understand why battle ships used in Gundam are designed as if they were traveling in sea! No turrets at the 'bottom' of battleships! It is obviously something that is rediculous in Gundam!

Some after-thoughts on the mechanics of Gundam Universe
First, I must point out that in space, weight of everything is zero, but the mass remains the same. So a light push could - by theory - make a large / heavy object to move, which is impossible to do so with gravity force. Therefore it explains how a satellite can change orbit with a small engine. Same thing for BIT, the thruster need not to be big or powerful, as long as it could generate enough power for movement and its weapon system. Remember, the "1 Year War" took place in time 1 century or more of our future, if they can build those massive colonies, such energy system should not be a problem.

Second was energy efficiency. We know that heat generated by our equipment are due to waste heat, especially power transfer (cable). This is due to resistance in the material used. If superconductor is used, energy transfer will be in 100% efficiency. The cooling system on MS should be dealing with heat generated by the thruster (the nozzle) and weapons (beam rifle, for example). Why? In space heat dissipate in radiation and very fast.
